
Northwestern Beats MSU Baseball In Series Finale, 12-2

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern (22-29, 19-9 Big Ten) put two runs on the board in each of the first three innings to take a 6-0 lead and cruised past the Spartans in the series finale, 12-2, Monday afternoon in Evanston, Ill.
Michigan State's best scoring opportunity came in the fifth inning when it had the bases loaded with no outs. Troy Krider gave the Spartans one run when he cracked a long RBI-single, but reliever Julio Siberio got the next two State batters to hit into a double play and groundout, respectively.
Northwestern stretched its lead to 10-1 in the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits and an error.
MSU's Adam Tripp got a run back in the top of the seventh, hitting a solo home run to center field, but Northwestern answered with a score in the home at bat. Geoff Dietz added a run for the Wildcats in the eighth with a solo home run and NU held on to win by a 12-2 final.
Starter Mark Sorensen (3-3) took the loss for MSU, allowing six runs on 12 hits in 4.0 innings pitched. Siberio (4-2) earned the win in relief, surrendering one run on two hits in 4.0 innings.
Northwestern out-hit the Green and White, 19-5, with six different Wildcats recording multi-hit games.
Michigan State's record fell to 24-27 overall and 11-17 in Big Ten play, while NU improved to 22-29, 19-9.
The Spartans (24-27, 11-17 Big Ten) will play their fifth game in four days, as they travel to Central Michigan on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference match-up against the Chippewas.
