MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - For the second straight game, Michigan State (24-28) fell behind 6-0 and came up short, suffering a 6-4 loss to Central Michigan Tuesday afternoon in Mount Pleasant.
The Chippewas (32-20) put a run on the board in the first and Brian Humphrey extended CMU's lead to 4-0 in the third inning, hitting a three-run homer to left field.
Central Michigan continued to add to its advantage in the fourth and fifth, scoring a run in each inning to open a 6-0 lead.
Michigan State pushed a run across in the top of the seventh inning, when an RBI groundout by Sean Walker scored E.J. Daws.
The Spartans tried to piece together a comeback in the eighth inning, putting three more runs on the board. Daws scored again, this time on an Alan Cattrysse RBI. John Lee and Adam Tripp each produced RBI singles to right field as MSU pulled to within 6-4.
State had the tying run at the plate with one out in the top of the ninth, but a strikeout and a groundout put the game in the books.
Michigan State has dropped four of its last five games and 10 of its last 15 overall.
In his first collegiate start, Quinn Ewert (2-1) took the loss for MSU, allowing six runs on six hits in 4.0 innings pitched. Dan Taylor (3-0) picked up the win for CMU, giving up just one run on three hits in 6.0 innings of work, while James Ricchio recorded his seventh save.
The Spartans look to get back to their winning ways this weekend, finishing the regular season with a four-game series against Illinois at Kobs Field, May 19-21. With an 11-17 conference record, MSU still is vying for a spot in the Big Ten Tournament.
