LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State baseball improved its record to 13-10, with a 6-3 win over Eastern Michigan at Oldsmobile Park Wednesday night. Starter Mike Takashima (1-0) posted his first win of the year, surrendering three runs on six hits, while striking out five in 6.0 innings of work. Throwing the final two innings, A.J. Dunn picked up his first save of the season, scattering two hits while striking out three.
Striking first, Eastern Michigan put two runs on the board in the third inning when Jeff Davis sent a two-run homer over the right field wall.
Michigan State answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. Reaching on a walk, Quinn Ewert advanced to third on a base hit by E.J. Daws and scored on a single by Ryan Basham. Daws crossed the dish on a double to left center by Kyle Day, and Basham scored on Jamey Embree's groundout. Alan Cattrysse later drove in Day for the fourth run of the inning.
The Green and White extended the lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning, as Day and Cattrysse each recorded their second RBI of the night.
Eastern Michigan was able to cut the deficit to three with a run in the sixth inning, but the Spartans hung on the rest of the way for the 6-3 win.
Day paced the Spartan offense, hitting 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, while Cattrysse went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Matt Dillard (1-2) took the loss for EMU, allowing four runs on six hits. Josh Ivan hit 3-for-4 from the plate for the Eagles.
The Spartans return to action and Big Ten play this weekend, traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., for a four-game series against Purdue.
