Corvallis, Ore. - Michigan State gymnast Kristen Coleman placed 23rd in the all-around competition (37.675) at the NCAA Championships held on the campus of Oregon State University Thursday. Coleman's top individual event finish was on the uneven bars, where she placed 29th with a score of 9.750. Twelfth-ranked Nebraska scored a 196.325 to finish first in session one, and advance to the Super Six Finals with fifth-ranked Alabama (2nd-196.250), and No. 2 Utah (3rd-196.175). They will be joined by Georgia, Iowa State and Florida in the team finals.
Coleman, MSU's first non-alternate championship qualifier since 1997, rotated with Utah in session one. On the balance beam, Coleman placed 39th with a 9.5; after a second rotation bye, Coleman tied for 40th with fellow Big Ten competitor Jenny Deily (Michigan), earning a 9.625 on the floor exercise.
After a strong start to the competition, Coleman struggled on the vault, scoring an 8.8 (44th) during the fourth rotation. Following a fifth-rotation bye, Coleman rebounded on her strongest event, earning a 9.750 on the uneven bars completing the all-around competition with a 37.675.
Individually, Utah's Ashley Postell won the all-around title with a 39.525, while Alabama's Ashley Miles claimed first place on the vault with an impressive 9.95 finish. Utah's Kristina Baskett finished first on the bars with a 9.90, and Nebraska's Emily Parsons won the floor exercise with a 9.95. Alabama's Terin Humprey and LSU's April Burkholder tied for first on the balance beam (9.875).
The NCAA Championships continue Friday night with the Super Six Finals beginning at 7 p.m. (PT). Championship competition concludes on Saturday with the individual finals set to begin at 7 p.m. (PT).
