COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State rowing team raced to mixed results on Saturday at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge against crews from Michigan, Duke and Ohio State. The first varsity four had the best results of the day, finishing 2-0, while head coach Matt Weise was happy with the progress his team made regardless of the outcome of individual races.
"Things went pretty well today," Weise said about the day. "The varsity four had a great day, but everyone left room for improvement. Finally, all the crews raced consistently enough for the coaches to evaluate where we need to go from here to improve."
The varsity four remained unbeaten on the season, sweeping their races on Saturday. The Spartans (7:39.0) defeated crews from Duke (8:20.83) and Michigan (7:53.66) in the morning races, then wrapped up the day by shaving eight seconds off its time in the afternoon race to finish ahead of Ohio State (7:37.12) and Duke (8:04.33).
The second varsity eight also claimed victory in their first race, downing Michigan (6:47.44) and Duke (7:13.6) with the winning time of 6:45.5. The Spartans then fell to Ohio State (6:41.3) in the afternoon race, but finished ahead of Duke (7:18.76).
The Spartan varsity eight finished second in both of its races Saturday, falling to Michigan (6:38.5), but finished almost 13 seconds ahead of Duke (6:55.79) in the morning. The V8 improved upon its time in the afternoon race, falling to Ohio State by a bowball, just three-tenths of a second behind the Buckeyes.
The Michigan State second varsity four raced to a pair of second place finishes as well, falling to Michigan and Ohio State, but finished ahead of Duke in both instances.
The Spartan novice crews also had a good day on the water, each recording a first and second place finish. Both the first and second eights fell to their Wolverine counterparts in the morning, with the second novice downing Virginia. In the afternoon, the Michigan State novice eight finished ahead of the Buckeyes, while the second novice boat downed both Virginia and Ohio State.
The Spartans head to Charlottesville, Virginia to face the Cavaliers in a dual meet on Saturday, April 8.
