East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State women's gymnastics team has qualified for NCAA Regional competition for the 16th time in school history, and the fourth time in the past five seasons. The Spartans are the fifth-seed in the Central Regional, which will be hosted by Louisiana State University on April 7, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, beginning at 6 p.m.
The University of Oklahoma enters the weekend ranked 6th in the nation and has been rewarded with the regional's No. 1 seeding. No. 7 LSU is seeded second, followed by No. 16 Penn State, No. 20 Kentucky, Michigan State and Ohio State.
"We knew that this would be a difficult field," said head coach Kathie Klages. "It is a great opportunity for this team and we'll just continue to focus on Michigan State gymnastics. We cannot worry about anything besides our team and our performaces, if we do that we'll be in good shape."
The Spartans are 3-1 vs. the Central Regional field this season, falling to UK in the season-opening meet on Jan. 6 and defeating OSU on Jan. 21. Michigan State placed second, ahead of Penn State and Ohio State, at the Big Ten Championships last Saturday evening. The Green and White was 1-1 against LSU, a season ago, and last faced Oklahoma during the 2003 season.
