Clutten Takes Fifth At Big Ten Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Ian Clutten took fifth place in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 54.34, Friday night at the Big Ten Championships, hosted by Indiana. Clutten became the first Spartan to reach the podium at this year's meet.
In the 200 freestyle, Adam Schmitt and Rudolf Wagenaar finished 15th (1:39.03) and 16th (1:39.23), respectively. In the 100 back, Johan Sunryd took 13th (50.28), while Wagenaar finished 14th (50.32).
Michigan State entered the meet hoping to score quality points with its relays, but were unable to take away any, disqualifying in both the 200 medley and 800 freestyle.
"We jumped early twice and that cost us at least 24 points or more," head coach Matt Gianiodis stated. "I will take full responsibility. The guys were too anxious on the block. It's frustrating and a major let down for us - but again it was a coaching mistake."
The Big Ten Championships will conclude with the third and final day tomorrow, with preliminaries beginning at noon and finals starting at 7 p.m.
