EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team earned 12 points in the first day of competition at the Big Ten Championships, hosted by the Ohio State University. Only the 200 medley and 800 medley relay swam on the opening day. The Spartans currently sit in eleventh place.
The Green and White took a hard hit in the 200 medley relay, suffering a disqualification due to an early start.
"We swam really well in the 200 medley relay, but we jumped early on one of our exchanges," head coach Matt Gianiodis commented. "The kids are in good spirits, but it was tough to lose that relay. We have our work cut out for us."
The 800 medley team of Heather Kiluk, Amanda Wyman, Lindsay Bockstiegel, and Tesla Hughes finished eleventh, scoring 12 points with a time of 7:33.60. Wisconsin leads all teams after day one, with 72 points.
Day two will kick off with event preliminaries at 11 a.m., with diving starting at 1 p.m. Both swimming and diving finals begin at 7 p.m; times are EST and local to Ohio State. The events are as follows: 200 Free Relay, 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free, 1-Meter Diving. The Women's Big Ten Championships conclude on Feb. 18.
