
Spartan Rowing To Add Five Recruits In 2007

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State rowing coach Matt Weise announced the signing of five members to the class of 2011 on Tuesday. Stephanie Bochenek (Hamilton, Ontario/Bishop Ryan), Monique Carter (Queen's Village, N.Y./Flushing), Shannon Dunn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area), Kellie LaPointe (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile), and Clare Vandelinder (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) have signed National Letters of Intent to compete at MSU beginning in the fall of 2007. The group will bring athleticism and experience to a Spartan team which has continued to grow under the leadership of Weise.
Stephanie Bochenek (Hamilton, Ontario/Bishop Ryan) - A member of the Leander Boat Club ... Competed at the 2006 Canadian School Boy Regatta in the single ... Also competed in the Canadian Henley Regatta in the four and eight ... A finalist at the Row Ontario Championships ... Finished in third place at the Head of the Thames and Head of the Welland in 2006 ... Also competed in basketball, cross country, volleyball, badminton, soccer, softball, and track and field at Bishop Ryan ... Named Bishop Ryan's athlete of the year in 2004 and 2006 ... Cross country MVP in 2004 and track MVP in 2005 ... Second in her class in 2006 and a four year Honor Roll Medal winner.
Weise on Bochenek. "Stephanie keeps surprising us. We gave her an erg standard when she visited us in September and she met it two weeks later. She continues to take large increments off of her erg tests. Stephanie is an inquisitive person that will thrive in a team environment."
Monique Carter (Queen's Village, N.Y./Flushing) - A member of the Row New York Rowing Club ... Named team's most valuable rower from 2004-06 ... Finished 11 out of 196 competitors at the 2006 CRASH-B World Indoor Rowing Championship ... Captured first at the Gold New York City Sprints, East End Regatta, and the Providence Sweeps and Sculls in the varsity eight and four ... A finalist at the USRowing Northeast Regional Rowing Regatta ... Finished 23 out of 47 at the Head of the Charles in the Junior 4+ ... Champion of the New York Athletic Club Indoor Rowing Championship ... Featured in the December 2005 issue of Rowing News as a member of the Row New York Summer Leader's Program ... An assistant coach for the novice summer rowing program at Phillips Exeter Summer Academy.
Weise on Carter. "Monique is a great athlete that has a consistent and strong stroke. She is also a responsible and thoughtful person that will be a great contributor to our team on, and off the water."
Shannon Dunn (Pittsburg, Pa./Fox Chapel Area High School) - Began rowing for Fox Chapel Crew Club as a sophomore ... Helped lead team to a Midwest Scholastic Championship in 2005 and 2006 ... Member of the varsity eight that captured first at the South Niagara Invitational in 2005 ... As a junior was a member of the varsity eight that finished first at the Head of the Ohio ... Also had first-place finishes in the varsity four at the Head of the Ohio, Speakmon, and TRRA Scholastic Sprints ... Captured third place in the varsity four at the Midwest Scholastic Championship ... Placed second in the varsity four at the Speakmon Regatta in 2006 ... Had third-place finishes in the varsity eight at the Head of the Ohio and Frogtown Races ... Also a member of the Fox Chapel swim team ... As a junior finished sixth in the 50 freestyle, and eighth in the 100 freestyle at the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League ... A member of the 400 and 200 freestyle relays, which finished in second and third, respectively, in the WPIAL ... 200 freestyle relay team placed third at the Pennsylvania State Competition; 400 freestyle relay placed eighth ... A Speedo All-American in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays ... 200 freestyle relay team has broken the Fox Chapel team record and three pool records during her career.
Weise on Dunn. "Shannon is a very talented and dedicated athlete with a great amount of potential. She started rowing in tenth grade and continues to swim competitively. As she specializes in rowing her times will only get better."
Kellie LaPointe (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile High School) - A four-year rower at Wyandotte Boat Club ... Named team MVP as a junior ... Earned a gold medal at the Midwest Scholastic Championship in 2005 in the pair ... Captured second placed in the varsity four at the Western Ontario ... As a sophomore was a member of the varsity four which captured first at the Midwest Scholastic Championship and Stotesbury, Hebda and Wyhi regattas ... Won first place in the varsity eight at the Canadian School Boy and Hebda ... A three-time News Herald Athlete of the Week ... Also a three-year letterwinner in swimming ... Competed at the state championship in 2004 ... Coach's award winner in 2004.

Clare Vandelinder (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) - A member of the Detroit Boat Club ... Participated in the 2006 Junior National Development Camp ... A member of the junior four that captured first at the USRowing Nationals ... Competed at the USRowing National Youth Championships in the varsity eight.
