The Michigan State men's golf team finished tied for fourth place at the Windon Memorial, hosted by Northwestern Oct. 8-9 at the Skokie Country Club. Matt Harmon paced the Spartans, turning in his second-top five performance of the season and the 11th of his career.
Harmon totaled a tournament second-best 11 birdies, six of those coming in the first round on Oct. 8, to finish at 5-over 218 (69-76-73). He led all players with a 2-over 4.07 stroke average in par-4 play. It marked the second time this season Harmon was the top finisher for Michigan State, having placed fourth at the Gopher Invitational on Sept. 16-17.
SMU's Colt Knost was the only golfer to finish under par, scoring a 2-under 211 (70-70-71), as he captured medalist honors and led the Mustangs to the team title with a 54-hole total of 29-over 881 (296-294-291). Kansas (306-290-299--895) finished runner-up, followed by Illinois (304-296-297--897). Michigan State (290-306-304) and Kent State (297-301-302) both turned in a score of 900, tying for fourth.
"We held our position but aren't satisfied with a fourth-place," MSU head coach Mark Hankins said. "The wind made it tough today, but we are always looking to improve. Matt (Harmon) managed his game very well today, and throughout the entire weekend."
MSU's Randy Hutchison and Ryan Brehm each placed in the top 20. Hutchison finished 15th with a 224 (74-76-74), the third top-20 finish of his career. Brehm carded a 227 (71-79-77), placing 19th, the ninth top-20 finish of his career.
Also competing for the Spartans were Steve Cuzzort, finishing tied for 37th (76-76-80--232), and Grant Tungate, placing 55th (79-78-83--240). Tungate and Brehm were two of only seven players that recorded an eagle or better in the tournament.
Other teams competing in this year's Windon Memorial included Colorado, New Mexico, North Florida, Northern Colorado, host Northwestern, Toledo and Western Illinois.
Skokie Country Club is known as one of the top ranked courses in America, rated No. 72 in the country by Golfweek. The Donald Ross-design was built in 1897 and hosted the 1922 U.S. Open.
