No. 9 Michigan Finishes On Top Against The Spartans

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team was bested by a tough opponent in the No. 9-ranked Wolverines on Wednesday. The Wolverines captured the first event of the evening and took off from there, coming away with a 153-85 victory. Freshman Mara Loniewski was the lone swimmer from Michigan State to capture a win against the Wolverines, placing first in the 200 freestyle. Katie Edwards captured second on both the one- and three-meter boards.
In the 1000 freestyle, Kendall Barry turned in a third place finish for the Spartans with a time of 10:42.
In the 200 freestyle, Loniewski (1:54.15) edged out Catherine Nosal (1:55.09) of Michigan to capture first place for the Spartans. Loniewski went on to take third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.73.
Sarah Biasello turned in a second-place finish for the Spartans in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 1:06.91.
In the final event of the evening, the Michigan State 200 free relay team of Megan Reponen, Julieanne Kahn, Elizabeth DeJonge and Kara Wackerle took second with a time of 1:38.46.
"I was really impressed with how Mara (Loniewski), Kendall (Barry) and Sarah (Biasello) swam tonight," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "They all swam really well. I hope that as a team we can bounce back against Iowa."
The Michigan State divers had a successful evening, with Edwards took second on the one- and three-meter boards with scores of 266.10 and 302.48, respectively. Allison Sayers placed third on the three-meter with a score of 276.52.
For Michigan, the relay team of Kaitlyn Brady, Justine Mueller, Margaret Kelly and Lindsey Smith broke a three-year-old pool record, with a time of 1:44.70. Individually, UM's Justine Mueller went on to set a new pool record of 4:19.52 in the 400 individual medley, breaking the old record of 4:25.80.
