Minneapolis, Minn. - Michigan State juniors Nick Rinks and Adam Monich bowed out in the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by the University of Minnesota. The doubles pair fell in their fifth round of the tournament, while the two also competed individually in singles, with Rinks advancing to the final eight.
"I think we had a good tournament, and we will definitely look to build on this success in the spring," MSU head coach Gene Orlando stated. "To make it to the top four doubles and for Nick to make it to the top eight singles was great. When you get that close, you want to close it out."
One match away from the doubles championship match, Monich and Rinks were edged, 8-5, by Louisville's Damar Johnson and Slavko Radman. The Spartan duo compiled an overall record of 6-2 this fall.
Earning three wins over the past three days, Rinks was eliminated from singles play by Ohio State's Chris Klingemann. Not going quietly, Rinks won the opening match but fell in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-7. Monich was forced out of the tournament on Oct. 21, in the second round by Radman, 6-2, 6-1. Rinks compiled an 8-2 record, while Monich was 3-3 on the fall season.
While Rinks and Monich have filled their allotted fall playing dates, the rest of the Michigan State team will return to action Oct. 27-29, at the Western Michigan Invite.
