EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State varsity rowing team finished strong at the Head of the Grand, winning four events and coming in second in two.
The Michigan State varsity four started off the day, coming in a close second to Grand Valley. The MSU crossed the line in 12:20, just one second behind the GVSU boat.
The Michigan State novice kicked off their season, with the novice "A" eight posting a winning time of 12:30. The boat finished ahead of crews from Grand Valley State, Northern, Western and the MSU club team. The novice "B" eight took fifth in the event with a time of 13:43.
In the second flight of varsity fours, the Michigan State "C" boat took first (12:36) with a comfortable lead over the second place crew from Eastern Michigan (12:47). The MSU varsity "D" boat came in third with a time of 12:50.
The Michigan State "C" novice eight also came in first in the second flight of novice eights with a time of 12:17.
In the final event of the day, the Spartan eights took first and second, with the "A" boat coming across the line in 10:34, followed by the MSU "B" boat with a time of 10:50. The Spartan "C" eight finished fifth (11:35) in the 12 boat race.
"We can take today and see what we did well," said head coach Matt Weise. "We had good intensity, but we need to work on rowing a little more effectively in the smaller boats. We did a better job of it in the eights, so we can learn from that and take another step forward with our progression."
Michigan State will continue its fall season next Saturday at Notre Dame.
