EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team had its ups and downs on Friday in the ITA Midwest Regional. The team advanced three doubles pairs to the round of 32, but the team of Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler was the only to move on to the round of 16, which will be held on Saturday. The two are also the only Spartans left to compete in the singles main draw.
"The team held up well through a long day of tennis," said head coach Erica Perkins "We're making a lot of the adjustments in matches that we had been talking about in practice. This will pay big dividends as we get to the spring season."
Pascale Schnizter was knocked out of the singles qualifying round by Erin Watkins of Marquette. Schnizter dropped the first set, 6-4, but took the second set, 1-6. Watkins narrowly took the third set, 6-5.
The Spartans had a strong first round of doubles, with the three teams consisting of Bader and Kebler, Sarah Andrews and Ana Milosavljevic, and Marianne Eelens and Schnitzer all advancing to the round of 32.
Eelens and Schnitzer began play for MSU, easily defeating their Wisconsin-Milwaukee counterpart of Kari Kastenholz and Ashley Clark, 8-1. The duo then faced the No. 1 seeded team of Brooke Buck and Kelcy Tefft from Notre Dame, falling 8-1 in the round of 32.
Bader and Kebler also took their first round match against Jackie Villines and Kara Courtney of Xavier, 9-7, to advance to the round of 32.
Andrews and Milosavljevic were also triumphant in their first round with Martina Wodzinski and Myriam Cueva of Toledo. The Spartan pair took the match, 8-4. In the round of 32, Andrews and Milosavljevic were defeated by Sam Murray and Alexis Conill of Northwestern, 8-4.
Bader and Kebler were the only pair to advance beyond the round of 32, taking down the duo of Shannon Brown and Robin Metzler of Marquette, 8-3.
"Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler fought extremely hard in their first round match and looked very tough running plays in their second match. Hopefully we can continue this momentum through tomorrow."
Bader and Andrews will continue in the round of 16 doubles at 9 a.m., and begin play in the singles main draw of 64, beginning at 10:15 a.m., at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
