EAST LANSING, Mich.-The Michigan State women's tennis team completed its first day of the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championship, with the round of 64 and round of 32 in the singles qualifying draw. Pascale Schnizter will compete in the round of 16 tomorrow, which determines which eight players will advance to the singles main draw. Two Spartans, Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler have already been selected to compete in the main singles draw which begins on Saturday.
Schnitzer, Sarah Andrews, and Ana Milosavljevic competed for Michigan State in the first round of 64 in the singles qualifier. Andrews was the first Spartan to compete, defeating Sarah Galon of Cleveland State in three sets. Andrews dropped the first set, 6-1, but battled back to take the next two, 6-3, 6-1.
Milosvaljevic was the next Spartan to take the court, falling to Golda Rubina of Chicago State in two sets (6-4, 6-0).
Schnitzer picked up where Andrews left off, taking out a top-four seed in Joanne Schickerling of Indiana State University, in two sets (6-1, 6-1).
In the round of 32, Andrews faced off against fellow Australian, Kayla Berry of Iowa, eventually falling in two sets (6-4, 6-4).
Schnitzer also competed in the round of 32, going up against Karina Chiarelli of Minnesota. Schnizter made fast work of her opponent, taking the match in two sets (6-3, 6-0).
"Pascale Schnitzer played exceptionally gutsy tennis today against two very good opponents," said head coach Erica Perkins. "Although we lost a couple of close matches, we are a better team than we were two weeks ago. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's matches, especially getting rolling in doubles."
Schnitzer will continue singles play tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility against Erin Watkins of Marquette with a spot in the singles main draw on the line.
In addition, MSU will field three doubles teams in the doubles draw, which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Schnitzer and Marianne Eelens will face Kari Kastenholz and Ashley Clark of UW-Milwaukee. Bader and Kebler will match up against Jackie Villines and Kara Courtney of Xavier at 3:15 p.m., while Andrews and Milosavljevic will square off with Martina Wodzinski and Myriam Cueva of Todedo at 4:15 p.m.
