Kreikemeier Penalty Kick Lifts MSU Over Loyola-Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. - A penalty kick by senior captain Matt Kreikemeier with 10 seconds remaining in regulation gave Michigan State a 2-1 victory over Loyola-Chicago on Oct. 15. The win improves Michigan State to 7-5-2 on the year. Of the Spartans' 14 games this season, nine have been decided by one goal.
Little offense was generated by either side in the first half, breaking for halftime with no score and just three shots by each team. Both squads picked up the pace in the second period, as MSU out-shot Loyola 14-10 on the day.
Michigan State took the lead in the 52nd minute, when Doug DeMartin notched his first goal of the season. Greg Janicki had a shot deflected, off a Kevin Reiman corner kick, and DeMartin was there with the follow. Janicki and Reiman were each credited with an assist.
Seven minutes later, with the Ramblers on the attack, Michigan State was whistled for a handball in the box, resulting in a Loyola penalty kick. Iradj Farahmand capitalized on the opportunity, tying the game at 1-1.
Michigan State continued to apply pressure, and after several shot attempts on goal in the final minute, Loyola was called for an infraction in the box, sending Kreikemeier to the penalty stripe. Kreikemeier made good, tallying his third goal and second game-winner of the season - all generated on penalty kicks.
Michigan State goalkeeper Jason Tillman recorded two saves in the winning effort.
After four straight games on the road, Michigan State now returns to East Lansing to host Valparasio on Oct. 18 and conference-foe Northwestern on Oct. 22.
