EAST LANSING, Mich. - Indiana used a penalty kick late in the second half and a score in the 107th minute to edge Michigan State, 2-1, at Old College Field on Oct. 1. The Spartans struck first in the game, on a goal by Kenzo Webster, but could not hold off the Hoosiers in the final minutes. It was Michigan State's (6-3-1, 0-2-1 Big Ten) fifth overtime game this season and second in as many games.
"I thought we played outstanding the entire game, we never played conservative," MSU head coach Joe Baum stated. "I thought we went after them, I was happy with our offensive aggressiveness. We thought there were some clear penalties that were not called, but that's how games go, sometimes you get the call, sometimes you don't."
In front of a homecoming crowd, Michigan State took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Taking a throw-in deep into the attacking third, David Hertel whipped a flip-throw just in front of the goal and Webster managed to get a foot on the ball, sending it past Hoosier netminder Chay Cain for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Spartans took a one-goal lead into halftime. Indiana (6-3-2, 1-0-1 Big Ten) was able to put the ball past MSU goalkeeper Jason Tillman early in the second period, but the goal was waved off as the result of a clear Hoosier foul.
Indiana pulled even with Michigan State in the 63rd minute, this time making use of a Spartan foul in the box. A hard tackle placed by Hertel on Indiana's Darren Yeagle just within the left elbow would result in a Hertel yellow card and a penalty kick for the Hoosiers. John Michael Hayden stepped to the stripe for IU, sending the strike to the left corner of the net.
The final minutes of the regulation would see each side pick up the attack, but both defenses held firm. Hertel was inches from giving the Spartans the go-ahead-goal with less than two minutes on the clock. Receiving a ball played out of the box, Hertel zipped a shot from well outside the 18, but IU's Cain lunged to his right and came up with a fingertip save.
Doug DeMartin also had a good look at the goal in the second overtime, but missed wide right. Indiana came up with the game-winner with 3:12 remaining, as Yeagle tapped in a deflected Hayden shot for the golden goal.
Michigan State honored past Spartans at halftime of the game as several hundred soccer alumni gathered over the weekend in celebration of the 50th anniversary of men's soccer at MSU. The Green and White return to action facing Oakland on Oct. 4 and Michigan on Oct. 8, playing both games are on the road.
