EAST LANSING, Mich. - For the second day in a row, Michigan State divers swept the competition, capturing the top three spots in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Taking Notre Dame down to the wire, the Spartan women's swimming and diving team came just short of an upset over the Irish Saturday afternoon in East Lansing, ultimately edged 153-147.
"Notre Dame is a solid program and it was great to see our kids go out there like that and compete," commented head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Rachael Hagerman had another fantastic day and our divers were awesome again."
Hagerman, picking up two individual titles, and aiding in a relay win Friday against Oakland University, repeated the feat Saturday against Notre Dame. Touching over a second ahead of the competition, Hagerman took the 200 breast in 56.95. For the second time in as many days, Hagerman led the Spartans to a sweep in the 50 free, coming in at 23.47, just ahead of teammates Eve Brusie (24.47) and Marsena Vranesic (24.79).
Hagerman teamed up with Carly Zenk, Courtney Ellabarger and Marsena Vranesic to power past the Irish in the 200 medley relay, finishing with a first place time of 1:46.55. Hagerman also helped pace the 400 medley team to victory, joining Bruise, Julie Kahn and Vranesic in a 3:29.84 win.
Also picking up a victory of her own in the lanes was Heather Kiluk, who took the 200 back in 2:06.62.
Leading the charge in the diving events was Katie Edwards, who was the only diver to score over a 300, with a 317.17, on the 1-meter board. Taking second in the competition was Amy Schmidt (299.32), while Danielle Williams finished third (289.27). Recording one of her best scores of the year, Williams topped the 3-meter event, tallying a 335.93. Placing second was Edwards, with her second 300-plus score of the day, at 301.88. Alycia Mokedanz rounded out the top three for the Spartans with a 297.61.
The Spartans return to action next Saturday, Jan. 28, when both the men and women host St. Bonaventure in the final regular season meet at 5 pm, in East Lansing.
