EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming and diving program swept Oakland University Friday night in East Lansing as the men toppled the Grizzlies 139-103, while the women ran away with a 149.5-97.5 victory.
"It was a good win," stated head coach Matt Gianiodis. "I was particularly impressed by our women and our diving did really well. Oakland is a good team and they swam hard, but I was impressed by the way our kids got after it tonight."
Highlighting the women's portion of the meet were the MSU divers, taking one-two-three in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. In the 1-meter competition, Katie Edwards took first (288.07), followed by Danielle Williams (270.07) and Amy Schmidt (266.85). On the 3-meter board it was Alycia Mokedanz recording the high score (288.53), with Allison Sayers taking second (260.32) and Edwards finishing third (256.13).
In addition to the diving events, State also took the top three spots in the 50 freestyle. Rachael Hagerman led the way with a time of 23.50, and coming in just fractions later were Katrina Kniff (24.35) and Eve Brusie (24.53).
Other top finishes for the women included two first place finishes by Heather Kiluk, who captured the 400 IM (4:29.38) and the 200 backstroke (2:08.51). Hagerman posted her second individual title on the day taking the 100 free (51.41), just ahead of teammate Marsena Vranesic who placed second, touching the wall at 53.63. Also picking up a victory in the lanes was Courtney Ellabarger, winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.44.
In the team events, the women's 200 medley relay of Carly Zenk, Ellabarger, Whitney Field and Kniff were victorious posting a time of 1:46.46.
For the men, Krzysztof Olszewski and Rudolph Wagenaar each came away with two individual titles. Olszewski won the 1,000 (9:45.89) and 500 freestyle (4:40.17) events, while Wagenaar picked up first place finishes in the 200 backstroke (1:50.45) and the 200 freestyle (1:40.65). In the men's relay events, Wagenaar, Clutten, Harley and Matt Wisniewski teamed up to take the 200 medley in 1:31.11.
The Spartan women pull double-duty this weekend, returning to action tomorrow, when they host Notre Dame at noon. Both MSU teams wrap-up the regular season next Saturday, Jan. 28, when State welcomes head coach Matt Gianiodis' alma mater, St Bonaventure into town, also set to begin at noon.
