East Lansing, Mich. - -
Emma Harris (Portage, Mich.) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season early in the second half and sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich.) posted her sixth shutout of the season as the Michigan State women's soccer team knocked off visiting Ohio State, 1-0. The Spartans improved to 5-2-3 overall and 1-0-0 in Big Ten play with the win.
MSU out-shot the Buckeyes, 10-4, and produced seven corner kicks to OSU's two during a scoreless first half. Senior forward Dana Voorheis (Saginaw, Mich.) had the best chance of the half for either team, when her shot from 18 yards out was redirected off of a defender, but Ohio State goalkeeper Staci Sinkway (8 saves) dove to her left and deflected the ball over the crossbar.
Harris' goal came just 1:50 into the second half, when she took a pass from Voorheis, slipped between two defenders and beat Sinkway with a left footed shot. Junior midfielder Jenee Witherspoon (Midland, Mich.) picked up her fifth assist of the season on the play.
The Spartans, bidding for an insurance goal, posted 11 more shots in the second half, out shooting the Buckeyes, 21-7, for the game. In the 50th minute, sophomore Lauren Astry's (Eden Prairie, Minn.) header sailed just over the bar, before classmate Kelly Hannon (Elmhurst, Ill.) missed the target on a nearly identical play two minutes later
Galas made four saves on the afternoon, and made numerous plays off her line, to pick up her sixth shutout of the season.
Michigan State continues Big Ten play next weekend, when they travel to Purdue on Friday, Sept. 30 and Indiana on Saturday, Oct. 2.
