The Michigan State women's soccer team (4-2-3) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, over in-state rival Detroit (3-3-2), but was forced to settle for a 2-2 tie, Wednesday afternoon at Old College Field. The Spartans, who outshot UDM 23-12, got on the board first when senior forward Emma Harris (Portage, Mich.) took a through ball from classmate Erin Konheim (West Bloomfield, Mich.), beat Titan goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry (10 saves) and buried the ball into an empty net for her fifth of the season.
Dana Voorheis (Saginaw, Mich.) pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 26th minute. Voorheis, a senior, ran down a long ball from sophomore midfielder Lauren Astry (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and beat Fortenberry low. Freshman Katie Timar (Novi, Mich.) was also credited with an assist on the play, the first point of her Spartan career.
The Titans got back into the game late in the first half, when freshman Emily Kiely popped a shot up and over Michigan State goalkeeper Nicole Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich.). Galas got a hand on the ball, but was unable to punch it over the bar.
Junior forward Mary Parker pulled UDM even with her fourth goal of the season, in the 77th minute, when she took a Kathy Banjavcic pass and beat Galas one on one. The goal marked the first time this season that the Spartans have allowed an opponent to score multiple goals.
The Green and White controlled the pace of play in overtime, but were unable to produce a game-winner. The Spartans had a great chance early in the second extra-session when sophomore defender Kelly Hannon (Elmhurst, Ill.) collected a loose ball off a corner kick, but missed just wide into the side of the net. Less than a minute later, Konheim's cross rolled just out of the reach of Voorheis, who was alone in front.
With the tie, Michigan State wraps up regular season non-conference play. MSU will host Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Old College Field in its Big Ten opener. The Spartans and Buckeyes are set to kick off at noon.
