Cincinnati, Ohio - - The Michigan State women's soccer team fell to Cincinnati, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Freshman defender Kim Sykes put the Bearcats on the board early, when her shot from 16 yards out eluded Michigan State Goalkeeper Nicole Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich.) in the 21st minute. Cincinnati midfielder Lindsey Noteboom served a corner into the box and Sykes pounced on the rebound of Becky Imhoff's attempted header and slid the ball past Galas into the lower left corner. The loss drops MSU to 0-1-1 on the young season, while the Bearcats improved to 1-1-0.
The Spartans struggled with a physical Cincinnati defense and managing just three shots on goal in the contest. Despite three second half cornerkicks the Green and White forced Bearcat goalkeeper Sherry Slye to make just one save down the stretch.
The two teams combined for 26 fouls and four yellow cards on the afternoon. Junior forward Jenee Witherspoon (Midland, Mich.) and sophomore defender Kelly Hannon (Elmhurst, Ill.) earned bookings for Michigan State.
Galas finished the game with nine saves and finished the road trip with 18 saves, allowing just two goals.
The Spartans (0-1-1) will look to crack into the win column when they return home Labor Day weekend when they take on Big 12 foes Texas A&M Friday, Sept. 2 and Texas Sunday, Sept. 4. Both games are 4:00 p.m. kick-offs at Old College Field.
