GRAND BLANC, Mich. - With a solid performance in Friday's second round of tournament action, current sophomore Ryan Brehm (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) earned the right to continue play at the 2005 Buick Open, making the final cut and finishing out the day with a 140 (71-69). The cut was set at 141. Brehm's six birdies, including four on the back nine led him to a 3-under outing for the afternoon. He sits tied for 58th and is now qualified to continue play into the weekend (July 30-31).
Former Spartan Jimmy Chestnut (Grand Rapids, Mich.) also had a fine showing on Friday, shooting a second-round 73 to give him a 156 (83-71) for the event. Chestnut failed to make the final cut and finished 156th overall.
The Buick Open, which has been a first for both players in their young careers, is being hosted at the 7,127 yard Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club.
Pacing the field at the tournament is defending champion, Vijay Singh, who shot a second-round 65 to put him at 13-under with a 131 (65-66). Singh has the opportunity to become the first player in the tournament's history to win the event three times. After tying the course record and shooting a 61 for the day, Tiger Woods sits one stroke behind Singh with a 132 (71-61).
