
Baseball Drops Big Ten Doubleheader At Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team dropped its Big Ten doubleheader against Michigan Saturday, April 30 at UM's Ray Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor. The Spartans dropped the first game, 8-1, and lost an early five-run lead in the second game en route to a 7-6 defeat in the nightcap. With the losses, MSU falls to 17-21 (6-9 Big Ten), while Michigan improves to 25-12 (7-9 Big Ten) on the season.
In the first game, the Spartans took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when freshman center fielder Ryan Sontag (Monroe, Mich.) opened the contest with a leadoff double, and later scored on an RBI single by sophomore left fielder Ryan Basham (Lowell, Ind.). Michigan scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead, highlighted by a run-scoring single from senior Kyle Bohm off MSU starting pitcher Chris Malec (Lindenhurst, Ill.). The Wolverines increased their lead to 5-1 after Bohm singled home senior Matt Butler, who reached base with a two-out single.
An RBI single by junior Chris Getz helped UM add three more runs in the sixth inning to provide the game's final margin.
Bohm and Getz each tallied two hits to lead Michigan's offensive unit. Senior Michael Penn (5-1) earned the complete-game victory for the Wolverines after allowing only one run on eight hits.
Basham led Michigan State's offensive attack, hitting a career-best 3-for-4 with a run batted in, while Sontag went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Malec (4-4) took the loss for the Spartans, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits in one and two-thirds innings.
In the second game, Michigan State claimed a 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by an RBI single by senior first baseman Erik Morris (Orchard Lake, Mich.) and an RBI sacrifice fly by junior Alan Cattrysse (Chatham, Ont.) to right field.
The Spartans' lead jumped to 5-0 in the top of the second. Sophomore catcher Kris Morris (Jenison, Mich.) led off the inning with a double to right-center and scored on a run-scoring single by sophomore shortstop Troy Krider (Coldwater, Mich.). On the next play, Krider scored on a single by sophomore right fielder Adam Tripp (Saugus, Calif.). Michigan came back with a five-run rally of its own in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 5-5, highlighted by an RBI double by A.J. Scheidt and a run-scoring bunt single by sophomore Eric Rose.
The Spartans regained the lead at 6-5 in the seventh inning after Erik Morris started the one-out rally with a single up the middle and scored on a Michigan throwing error. The Wolverines tied the game at 6-6 on a run-scoring double by sophomore Brad Roblin off MSU relief pitcher Drew Mahan (Okemos, Mich.). Roblin scored the game-winning run on an RBI single by Butler to end the game.
Butler led Michigan in the second game, hitting 2-for-4 with two RBI. Junior Paul Hammond (2-3) captured the win for the Wolverines, allowing only one run on four hits in five and a third innings in relief.
Erik Morris paced the Spartans' offense by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Kris Morris went 2-for-3 with a double. Mahan (0-2) took the loss for Michigan State, giving up two runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Both teams will conclude the series at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing, Mich., on Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m.
