Nathan Gunthorpe Finishes Seventh At Conrad Rehling Alabama Invitational

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Freshman Nathan Gunthorpe (Ovid, Mich.), competing in his first collegiate tournament as an individual, finished seventh at the Conrad Rehling Alabama Spring Invitational on Sunday, March 13. Gunthorpe closed the tournament with a 221 (78-68-75), just one stroke out of third place, at the Ol' Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
As a team, No. 13 Michigan State finished in fourth place with a three-round score of 906 (299-301-306). Alabama took home the tournament title with an 881, followed by Georgia State (884) and UAB (884). Meanwhile, Georgia State's Steve Tiley took medalist honors after shooting a 66 on the final day of play and recorded a three-round 211 (70-75-66).
Sophomore Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and freshman Ryan Brehm (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) led the Spartans as the duo finished in a three-way tie for 12th place with a 225. Harmon shot a 75 on day three after posting rounds of 72 and 78, while Brehm finished with a 78 after recording rounds of 73 and 74.
Senior Jimmy Chestnut (Grand Blanc, Mich.) finished tied for 25th with a 229. Chestnut shot a final-round 79, after shooting a 74 on day one and a 75 on day two. Teammate Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) tied for 29th with a 230, just one stroke behind Chestnut. Ruthkoski, who had entered the day in 36th place, moved up seven spots after recording a final-round 74.
Freshman Brandon Cigna (Novi, Mich.), who was making just his second career start, finished tied for 46th with a 237. Cigna shot a 79 on the final day of play after posting an 80 in the opening round and a 78 in the second round.
Sophomore Mitch Pierce (Fenton, Mich.) was the other Spartan to compete as an individual, finishing 62nd. Pierce closed the tournament with a three-round score of 244 (85-79-80).
MSU returns to the links at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, March 25-26.
