
Michigan State Concludes Ohio State Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Spartan men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the third and final day of the Ohio State Invitational, Sunday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. The women's team took fourth in the invite, while the men finished fifth. Both teams return to action on Dec. 10, hosting Ball State at the Charles McCaffree Pool at 1 p.m.
"We got everything out of the meet that we wanted to accomplish and hopefully we set ourselves up for a really good spring semester," commented head coach Matt Gianiodis."The standout performance today was Courtney Ellabarger, she had a great swim. Adam Schmitt did very well also. It was a good meet for Michigan State."
Both Ellabarger and Schmitt picked up fourth place finishes on Sunday. Ellabarger finished the 200 back in a time of 2:20.91, while Schmitt turned in a 45.77 in the 100 freestyle.
The day after he set the pool record in the 100 breaststroke, Ian Clutten finished third in the 200 breast, at 2:02.73.
Other top finishers for State were Katrina Kniff, taking eighth in the 100 free (53.25), Heather Kiluk, finishing 10th in the 200 back (2:06.65) and Erika Templeton, placing 11th in the 200 breast (2:24.24). On the men's side, Johan Sunryd finished seventh in the 200 back, touching at 1:50.73.
In the last event of the meet, both 400 free relay teams took fifth place for Michigan State. The women's team of Julie Kahn, Marsena Vranesic, Rachael Hagerman and Kniff finished in 3:30.13 and the men's team of Rudolf Wagenaar, Schmitt, Matt Wisniewski and David Habel finished at 3:02.01.
Complete team results are as listed below; men's swimming teams partcipating included Iowa, Kenyon, Michigan State,#9 Minnesota, #20 Ohio State and #23 Penn State. Diving teams attending were Arizona State, Bowling Green, #7 Florida, Kenyon, Illinois, Iowa, Miami (Fla.), Michigan State, #9 Minnesota, #20 Ohio State, #23 Penn State and #14 Purdue.
The women's swimming field was comprised of Bowling Green, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, #20 Ohio State and #12 Penn State while the diving field consisted of #25 Arizona State, Bowling Green, #4 Florida, Kenyon, Illinois, Iowa, Miami (Fla.), Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, #12 Penn State and #21 Purdue.
