EAST LANSING, Mich. - After wrapping up a long week of final exams, the Michigan State swimming and diving team took time to give back to the Greater Lansing community before heading home for the holiday break. Both the men's and women's squads, including coaches, spent Friday, Dec. 16, volunteering eight hours in support of the Salvation Army Toy Distribution Center.
"It's the holiday season and it's time to be grateful for all that we have and give something back," stated senior Matt Wisniewski, who helped coordinate the event. "The seniors agreed that this year we wanted to try a community outreach as a team."
The eight-hour day was divided into two four-hour shifts, but after the first four hours many of the student-athletes enjoyed the experience so much that they stayed on for the extra shift.
"They were such a big, fantastic help," commented the Salvation Army's director of the event, Sandy Hunter. "Some of them came right here from taking their final exam."
"They had a great attitude, with such a willingness to help," Hunter added. "Without them, we wouldn't have been able to cover the shift. They did everything from stock tables to escort families through the toy shop. You name it, they did it. No job was too big or too small. We hope they will come back next year."
Reaching out to those in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties, the Salvation Army Toy Distribution Center will touch over 1,000 families over the holiday season.
