Spartan Swimming and Diving Sweeps Ball State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Both the Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Ball State Saturday afternoon, returning with victories. The Spartan men finished the day with six first place finishes, edging the Cardinals 128-115, while the women took first in seven events, in a 137-106 win. Highlighting the afternoon was a one, two, three sweep of the one-meter and three-meter diving events by the Spartan women.
On the one-meter board, taking the top spot and posting an NCAA qualifying score of 276.97 was Amy Schmidt. Katie Edwards followed in second (261.37) and Danielle Williams rounded out the top three (259.65). In the three-meter event, it was Williams taking first (264.97), Edwards in second (264.45) and Schmidt placing third (259.27).
State went one-two in the 200 breaststroke, as Erika Templeton finished in 2:24.80 and Courtney Ellabarger finished in 2:24.81. In the 50 free, 500 free and the 1,000 free, the Green and White finished two-three. Julie Kahn finished second in the 50 free (24.75) while Katrina Kniff took third (24.77). Telsa Hughes finished in 5:11.08 to place second in the 500 free and Marlys Fuqua took third (5:15.88). The two flip-flopped spots in the 1,000 free, with Fuqua placing second (10:38.77) and Hughes taking third (10:48.09).
Other individual first place finishes for the MSU women were Heather Kiluk in the 200 IM (2:09.18) and Rachael Hagerman in the 100 free (52.33). Third places finishes were Alison Johnson in the 200 fly, (2:12.05), Kiluk in the 200 back, (2:07.96), Amanda Wyman in the 200 free (1:57.91) and Marsena Vranesic in the 100 free (54.65).
In the relays, the 'A' team of Carly Zenk, Ellabarger, Hagerman and Kniff captured first in the 200 medley (1:48.38) while the 'B' team of Whitney Field, Templeton, Amber Schroeder and Kahn finished third (1:49.35) for Michigan State. In the 200 free relay, the 'A' team of Hagerman, Vranesic, Kahn and Kniff took first (1:36.99) and the 'B' team of Eve Brusie, Zenk, Field and Wyman swam to third (1:38.67).
On the men's side, State took the top three spots in the 200 fly, with David Habel leading the way (1:59.12), followed by James Steele (2:02.36) and Matt Wisnieswki (2:04.86). Going one-two in the 200 IM were Adam Schmitt (1:57.01) and Habel (1:57.03). Placing one-three in the 200 back were Rudolf Wagenaar (1:55.43) and Habel (1:58.98) while Matt Torres (9:55.65) and Jesse Noble (10:11.51) managed to do the same in the 1,000 free. Capturing first place in the 500 was Krzysztof Olszewski.
Two-three finishes for the Spartans were Noble (2:15.71) and Torres (2:16.71) in the 200 breast, David Lessard (22.05) and Johan Sunryd (22.57) in the 50 free, Ian Clutten (48.51) and Marcus Poteete (49.76) in the 100 free, and Matt McNichols (1:44.43) and Wisnieswki (1:46.35) in the 200 free.
In the diving events, Matt Akerley took second in the one-meter (271.80) and third in the three-meter (234.97). Meanwhile, Tylor Fick took second in the three-meter competition (238.05).
In the relays, the 'A' team of Wagenaar, Clutten, Nick Harley and Schmitt finished first in the 200 medley (1:34.02), while the 'B' of Sunryd, Poteete, Steele and Lessard placed third (1:38.26).
Saturday's meet marked the final outing for Michigan State in 2005. The Spartans return to action at the beginning of the new year, traveling to Nassau, Bahamas. The men and women take on conference rival Indiana on Jan. 1, and the women conclude the trip, facing Nebraska on Jan. 6.
