Women's Tennis Opens Play At Northwestern Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. - Ambition and eagerness is what it took to add a third fall tournament for the Michigan State women's tennis team. Two Spartans saw victories, including one over a Big Ten opponent, at the Northwestern Invitational on Friday (Oct. 7). All five MSU players will continue action in Evanston on Saturday (Oct. 8). Friday's results were delayed due to weather.
Two Spartans clinched victories in the first-round of play. Junior Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) defeated Wisconsin's Erin Jobe, 6-2, 6-4, and freshman Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa) defeated DePaul's Clare Chemeil, 6-0, 6-1.
Junior Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) and sophomore Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) both fought through three-set matches but fell in the third set.
Ohio State's Caitlin O'Keefe grabbed the first set over Bader, but Bader returned to take the second set, 5-7. O'Keefe grabbed the third set, 6-3, to take the match. Western Michigan's Kerstin-Beeke Pahl defeated Andrews 5-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Freshman Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) received a first-round bye.
In doubles action, Andrews and Bader received a first-round bye before dropping their first match to WMU's Rattiya Hiranrut and Noriko Sarvta, 8-0.
Baron and Milosavljevic both played doubles with partners from other schools.
Singles and doubles action will continue on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Northwestern.
