The Michigan State women's tennis team concluded its fall tournament season on Saturday (Oct. 22) at the Wilson ITA Midwest Regional Championships after two rounds of main-draw singles play and one round of main-draw doubles
Illinois' Momei Qu barely snuck by freshman Stephanie Kebler in a three-set battle. Kebler kept it a tight race after she grabbed the first set 7-6(4). However, Qu outlasted the young Spartan taking the next two sets, 7-5, 6-4.
"We had some definite highlights at this tournament," said head coach Tim Bauer. "One example is Stephanie Kebler who qualified for the main draw as a freshman."
Junior Jessica Baron also held a tight three-set match against Indian's Brianna Williams. After falling 5-7 in the first set, Baron bounced back taking the second set, 6-2. In the final set William's grabbed the 6-4 win to take the match.
The No. 1 seed Cristelle Grier of Northwestern defeated MSU sophomore Christine Bader, 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles action, Sarah Andrews and Bader were knocked out of doubles play as they lost in the third-round to Notre Dame's Lauren Connelly and Kiki Stastny, 8-2.
"Overall, the tournament helped me get to know our new players a little bit better after seeing them under match pressure. We have the skills to be a phenomenal team. We need to become more seasoned competitors and the fall season helps that process. I think our team wants it, but they just need to learn how to get it."
Michigan State will return to action on Jan. 14, 2006 when it travels to Nashville, Tenn. for two matches.
Tournament action will resume on Sunday (Oct. 23) at 9 a.m. with round four of doubles main-draw with round three of the singles main-draw at 1 p.m.
