
MSU Swimming and Diving Holds 50th Annual Alumni Swim Meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The longest continual running alumni function on campus, Michigan State's swimming and diving program celebrates its 50th annual alumni meet Saturday, Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. at the Charles McCaffee Pool in the IM West Building. The event has been on going since its foundation in 1955 by the Seibold family, in conjunction with MSU swimming legend, coach Charles McCaffree. Also included in Saturday's festivities will be the honoring of many former Spartans and the presentation of the William Huesner award.
Those being recognized this year are: the1945 AAU National Champions, with team members Tom Bolenbaugh, John Demond and Dave Seibold in attendance; the 1957 Men's Big Ten Champion team; and the 1973, `74 and `75 Women's Big Ten Champion teams. Michigan State's only Olympic Gold Medalist, Clark Scholes, will also be honored.
Accepting the fourth-annual William Huesener service award will be Jack Seibold, Jane Hoag-DeMarchi and Anne MacCaskill, for their dedication and service to the university.
"I am really excited that we are going to get a chance to host the alumni who are responsible for building the tradition of this men's and women's program," stated head coach Matt Gianiodis. "I am honored to be here during this golden anniversary of such a fun event and I am proud that we are finally going to recognize the championship swimming and diving teams of the past. Hopefully not lost in everything are our Heusner Award winners, who have given so much support to our program over many years."
Also scheduled to be in attendance are former coaches, Jennifer Parks and Richard Bader.
Check-in and welcome for the event begins at 9 a.m., with diving kicking off the meet at 9:30. The meet will break at 9:45, with head coach Matt Giandiodis giving an address, followed be the Heusener award presentations and the introduction of the championship teams. Michigan State seniors will be introduced as well, before continuing with the meet. Following the event at 10:30 will be a pre-game tailgate on the pool deck, prior to the MSU-Northwestern football game at 12:10 p.m. The 1945 AAU National Champions will also be honored at Spartan Stadium during the football game.
