Freshman Stephanie Kebler is the only Spartan to advance in the qualifying draw at the Wilson ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Day one of the five-day tournament began on Thursday (Oct. 20) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility featuring two rounds of qualifying action.
Kebler, grabbed a, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Michigan's Lindsey Goldstein to advance to Friday's round of 16. Prior to that victory, Kebler breezed by Ohio State's Ciara Finuncane, 6-1, 6-1.
"My attitude and consistency has really improved," said Kebler. "I'm a lot more confident with my game and trusting my ability to make shots. I was really proud of the way I turned that first set loss today. It's something that I've struggled with in the past, so I was glad to overcome that."
If Kebler defeats Purdue's Anna Dzeva on Friday, she will secure a spot in the singles main-draw on Saturday.
Junior Sarah Andrews defeated Northern Illinois' Dora Delgadillo before falling to Detroit's Annie Moore in a tough three-set match. Moore defeated Andrews, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Ana Milosavljevic defeated Illinois' Emily Wang, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round but fell to Toledo's Eunince Paravicini, 7-6(8), 6-2 in the second.
Freshman Marianne Eelens dropped her fist match, 6-4, 6-0 to Bowling Green's Jenna Nussbaum before picking a win in consolation play over Northern Illinois' Megan Brookes, 6-2, 6-1.
Minnesota's Spileia defeated junior Pascale Schnitzer, 6-4, 6-2. Schnitzer also picked up a consolation win over Bradley's Elise Montrose, 3-6, 6-2 (10-5). Doubles main-draw action begins tomorrow at approximately 2 p.m.
Jessica Baron and Christine Bader will compete in the singles main-draw on Saturday at 9 a.m.
