
Women's Tennis To Compete At Wolverine Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team will continue its fall season on the road at the Wolverine Invitational tournament hosted by the University of Michigan this Friday-Sunday (Oct. 1-3).
Other teams competing in the tournament this year include: Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Marquette, Michigan, Western Michigan and Xavier.
Doubles competition will begin on Friday at 10 a.m. followed by the first round of singles matches at 1 p.m. On Saturday, competition will start at 9 a.m., and on Sunday the consolation and finals will be played at 9 a.m. for doubles followed by singles at 10:30 a.m.
Last year at the Wolverine Invitational, sophomore Sara Andrews (Darwin, Australia) competed in the consolation finals of the "Maize" singles flight, but fell to Ashley Jakupcin of Bowling Green, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5. Andrews, along with former Spartan Caroline Lay, finished third in doubles.
In the "Wolverine" singles flight, senior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) defeated Bowling Green's Laura Kokinda, 6-2, 6-0. The "Blue" singles flight saw junior Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) with a victory in her consolation match against Rattiya Hiranrat of Western Michigan, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Last weekend, the Spartans hosted their home tournament, The Yonex Spartan Cup, to open the fall season. Andrews highlighted the tournament for MSU by clinching the "B" flight singles championship, while senior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) was runner-up in the "A" singles flight.
Next week, the Spartans will continue their fall season on the road at the Notre Dame Fall Invitational.
