NORMAN, Okla. - Michigan State wrestling traveled to Oklahoma Friday (Feb. 6), losing a tough decision to the Sooners, 29-6. Andy Simmons picked up a victory at 141 pounds while Jeff Clemens secured a victory at 197. The Spartans fall to 1-9 on the season.
MSU opened the match with an early lead as Clemens claimed victory at 197 pounds, defeating Austin David, 6-4. Senior co-captain Mike Keenan was unable to continue the momentum for the Green and White, getting pinned for the first time this season by Leonce Crump in 2:05. The Sooners jumped out to a 6-3 lead through two matches.
Craig Trombly's 10-2 major decision loss at 125 and Tony Greathouse's major decision loss at 133 at the hands of Mimi Miller extended the OU lead to 14-3, but Simmons looked to score for the team.
Simmons defeated Shane Kidd, 3-0, to give the Spartans three team points and what would become the final MSU scoring of the meet.
Senior Ryan L'Amoreaux lost narrowly to Jeff Ecklof, 7-4. Classmate and co-captain Arsen Alexsanyan also dropped a close 2-1 decision to Rafael Maturino. Redshirt freshman Mike Escobedo could not break the Spartans skid at 165 with a 11-2 major decision loss.
