MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Michigan State women's swimming and diving finished 10th at the 2004 Big Ten Championships at the University Aquatics Center in Minneapolis, Minn. The final day of competition (Feb. 21) was paced by the 400 freestyle relay team's sixth place finish in the event, breaking the varsity record by nearly two seconds.
Michigan State broke four varsity relay records en route to its 10th place finish at the Championships. The 400 free relay team of Tammy Jones, Katrina Kniff, Alicia Copestick and Eve Brusie touched out in 3:22.96, blasting the record set at last year's Championships of 3:24.87.
"I'm really proud of our relay teams. For them to break four of five varsity records is absolutely huge," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Tammy Jones was solid throughout the Championships. Now we look to NCAAs to what we might be able to accomplish at that level."
Jones added another record-breaking performance to her long list of accomplishments at the 2004 Championships. The junior and Conyers, Ga., native swam the 100 free in 50.49, breaking her own varsity record set one year ago.
Michigan State men's swimming and diving travels to the Big Ten Championships hosted by Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind., Feb. 26-28.
