HAMILTON, Ohio - The Michigan State women's tennis team bounced back from a pair of close losses last weekend to earn a 5-2 victory at Miami (Ohio) Saturday afternoon. The victory improved MSU's record to 3-4 while Miami slipped to 3-3.
MSU dropped all three doubles matches to the RedHawks to fall into a 1-0 hole, but rebounded to win five of the six singles matches.
"Our doubles performance was dismal," said MSU head coach Tim Bauer. "But we had a great turnaround in singles, nearly winning every match. That was what we needed and I hope mentally it's going to be a big lift for the team to have a comeback win like that."
In singles, junior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) battled to a 7-6(2), 6-1 victory at No. 1 over Miami's Linda Jirouskova, setting the tone for the match. Senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) followed suit with a 7-6(5), 1-0 ret. victory at No. 2.
MSU's freshmen also performed well, collecting three singles points. Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 4, Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 and Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) posted a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Only sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) fell in singles, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 3.
"All the singles played well," said Bauer. "Keri Thompson went out with the attitude we're looking for. She willed her win to win her match and that rubbed off on a lot of the other players, and that's what we need. We needed a good team win like this - a good team effort."
Michigan State will continue its road trip when the Spartans visit Ball State Sunday at Noon.
