Templeton, Wagenaar Lead MSU Swimming And Diving Past Ball State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Juniors Erika Templeton (Canton, Ohio) and Rudolf Wagenaar (Capetown, South Africa) each captured two first-place finishes Saturday as the Michigan State men's (3-4) and women's (1-4) swimming and diving teams posted a sweep of Ball State at the Charles McCaffree Pool. The men's team defeated the Cardinals, 175-125, while the women's team defeated BSU, 174-126.
Templeton won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.60) and the 200 breaststroke (2:25.82) events for the Spartans, while Wagenaar captured the 100 backstroke (52.48) and 200 backstroke (1:55.33) event titles.
"I felt our team held pretty tough. Ball State is a good team, but we are a better team than they are, and I think we established that from the first event today," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis.
Freshman Adam Schmitt (Grand Haven, Mich.) won the 100 breast (59.98) and junior Ian Clutten (Capetown, South Africa) finished first in the 200 breast (2:07.35). Senior Chad Wilson (Holt, Mich.) captured first in the 1,000 freestyle (9:53.99), while junior David Habel (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the 200 butterfly (1:55.09).
Freshman Jesse Noble (Metamora, Mich.) won the 400 individual medley (4:13.72) and junior Bryant Steele (Novi, Mich.) won the 100 fly (51.39) for MSU. Wagenaar and Clutten teamed with juniors Nick Harley (Rockford, Mich.) and Matt Wisniewski (Plymouth, Mich.) to win the 200 medley relay (1:32.54).
Senior Justin Laskowski (Bay City, Mich.) placed first in the one-meter diving event (288.30). Laskowski also finished in a tie with freshman Tylor Fick (Bay City, Mich.) for second place in the three-meter event (271.50).
Junior Tesla Hughes (Taft, Tenn.) won the 1,000 free (10:34.36), while senior Tammy Jones (Conyers, Ga.) captured the 200 fly (2:06.62).
Junior Rachael Hagerman (Goodland, Kan.) earned first-place honors in the 100 fly (58.97) and freshman Amanda Wyman (Essexville, Mich.) captured the 100 free (54.34).
Sophomore Eve Brusie (Grand Haven, Mich.) won the 50 free (24.21), while junior Whitney Field (Ann Arbor, Mich.) placed first in the 100 back (59.66).
Freshman Danielle Williams (Dorctester, Ontario) and sophomore Katie Edwards (Livonia, Mich.) placed first (306.30) and second (292.80), respectively in the three-meter diving event. Both scores qualified them for NCAA Regionals. Sophomore Amy Schmidt (Grand Ledge, Mich.) also qualified for the NCAA Regionals with her victory in the one-meter event (273.15).
The team of Hagerman, Jones, Brusie and junior Katrina Kniff (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) captured the 200 free relay (1:35.24). The MSU `A' quartet of sophomore Carly Zenk (Southgate, Mich.), junior Courtney Ellabarger (Carmel, Ind.), Field and Kniff won the 200 medley relay (1:45.67).
The Spartans return to competition on Jan. 5 at the Miami Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla.
