SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Senior Tammy Jones and juniors Ian Clutten and Katrina Kniff combined to win four events, but the Michigan State swimming and diving teams fell to host Notre Dame and Pittsburgh Friday at the Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend, Ind.
The men's team (1-3) lost to the No. 17 Panthers, 185-115, and to the Fighting Irish, 213-87. The women's team (0-4) dropped decisions to Pittsburgh (191.5-108.5) and Notre Dame (199-101).
"We swam okay here tonight and got strong performances from Ian (Clutten) and Tammy (Jones)," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Unfortunately, we got caught up against two good teams after being off a week from competition."
Clutten led the Spartan men after winning the 100 breaststroke (55.69) and 200 breaststroke (2:02.17) events. Sophomore Jason Vadney took third place in the 200 freestyle (1:42.70).
Clutten and fellow juniors Rudolf Wagenaar, Nick Harley and Matt Wisniewski teamed up to set a new Rolfs Aquatic Center record en route to finishing first in the 200 medley relay (1:31.56). Freshman Adam Schmitt, senior Patrick Saucedo, Vadney and Wisniewski combined to finish third in the 400 free relay (1:42.56).
On the women's side, Jones won the 100 free (52.39), while placing third in the 200 free (1:53.78) and 200 individual medley (2:08.56). Junior Courtney Ellabarger finished third in the 100 breast (1:05.37) and junior Tesla Hughes placed second in the 1000 free (10:18.84).
The MSU `A' team of juniors Katrina Kniff and Rachael Hagerman, sophomore Eve Brusie and Jones placed third (3:31.80) in the 400 free relay.
Freshman Danielle Williams finished second in the one-meter (249.90) and three-meter diving events (275.25). Kniff (24.11) and Hagerman (24.13) finished first and second in the 50 free, respectively.
The MSU men will host two dual meets at the Charles McCaffree Pool, located in the IM West Building, next weekend. The Spartans face Michigan in a Big Ten dual meet on Friday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. before going up against Western Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 20 at noon.
