Men's Swimming And Diving Dominates Iowa In Home Opener

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Juniors Ian Clutten and David Habel and senior Justin Laskowski each won two events as the Michigan State men's swimming and diving team defeated Iowa, 164-125, in its home opener at the Charles McCaffree Pool Saturday. With the win, MSU improves to 1-1 (1-0 Big Ten), while Iowa falls to 0-2 (0-1 Big Ten) this season.
"I'm happy to see that we improved off last week's performance, though we still have a way to go this season," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis.
Clutten captured the 100 breast (55.45) and the 200 breast (2:02.25). Habel won the 500 free (4:38.95) and the 1000 free (9:37.39). Freshman Adam Schmitt won in the 100 free (52.27) and placed second in the 200 free (1:42.53). Sophomore Jason Vadney won the 200 free (1:41.69) and junior Matt Wisniewski won the 50 free (21.26). Junior Nick Harley finished first in the 100 fly (50.99) and second in the 50 free (21.60).
Laskowski led a sweep in the diving events by placing first in the one-meter (326.62) and the three-meter (343.27). Sophomore Matt Akerley finished second and freshman Tylor Fick placed third in both events.
Laskowski's scores in both events qualified him for the NCAA Regionals. Akerley's score of 335.17 in the three-meter qualified him for NCAA Regionals.
The team of Clutten, Harley, Wisniewski and junior Rudolf Wagenaar won the 200 medley relay (1:45.72) for the Spartans.
The MSU men next compete in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 12 against Notre Dame and Pittsburgh.
