Keri Thompson Wins "Blue" Singles Flight At Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team concluded three days of play Sunday at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan.
Senior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) won the "Blue" singles flight, which was the top flight for singles, defeating Michigan's Allie Shafner in the final, 6-2, 6-2. Thompson went 4-0 in singles play, winning every set and not allowing any of her opponents to win more than five games in a match.
Thompson also teamed with sophomore Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) for a third-place finish in the doubles bracket. The Spartan duo defeated Lindsey Goldstein and Monica Sly of Michigan in the third-place match, 8-3.
Also in doubles, freshman Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) and senior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) won the consolation draw with their fourth straight victory during a 9-8(2) victory over Kristen Clary and Emily Tuchscherer of Xavier. In another consolation match, senior Marissa Macholz (East Lansing, Mich.) and junior Marta Walasek (Ann Arbor, Mich.) lost to Calbeto and Bonnelly of Marquette, 8-1.
In a "Blue" singles flight consolation match, Bader fell to Erin Watkins of Marquette, 7-5, 7-5.
In the "Maize" singles flight, Gustafson won her final consolation match, 5-7, 7-6(3), 10-8 over Noriko Saruta of Western Michigan. Andrews fell in the third-place match to Goldstein, 6-3, 6-1, and Walasek was beaten by Samantha Liu of Cincinnati, 7-6(6), 6-3.
In the "Victors" singles round robin flight, Macholz was defeated by Alicia Papa of Xavier, 6-1, 6-0.
The MSU women's tennis team will take a weekend off before competing at the Notre Dame Fall Invitational Oct. 15-17.
