EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team broke a five-game Big Ten losing streak Friday, defeating Michigan, 2-1, in the conference finale for both teams at Old College Field. With the win, MSU improves to 10-7-1 (3-6-1 Big Ten) on the season, while Michigan drops its record to 9-6-2 (6-3-1 Big Ten).
The Spartans got on the board in the 41st minute after forward Dana Voorheis (Jr./Saginaw) scored on a wide open chip shot from three yards out after maneuvering past UM goalkeeper Megan Tuura for a 1-0 lead.
Defender Emily Carbott (Sr./Northville) and forward Lauren Zacharski (Sr./Troy) assisted on the goal.
Zacharski scored her third goal of the season in the 69th minute after recovering a misplay from Tuura and hitting the right corner to give the Spartans a 2-0 advantage. Defender Nina Mastracci (Jr./Troy) recorded an assist on the goal.
"I just followed the ball and she touched it with her foot. I just kept on with the play and it just worked out for me," said Zacharski.
Laura Tanchon scored in the 85th minute to help Michigan cut State's lead by 1, but the Wolverines were shut down by the Spartan defense for the final five minutes to preserve the victory.
"Our defense kept its composure. We misplayed that goal completely and we could've had some weird things happen," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "We did better today as supposed to earlier in the season at just playing with the lead and keeping our composure, and we got the result."
The Wolverines held the advantage over the Spartans in both shot attempts (14-5) and corner kicks (4-2), while goalkeeper Erin Carlson (Sr./Portage) recorded four saves for MSU.
"We were ready for this game and we were all excited. It just worked for us and I felt it," said Carlson.
Michigan State will battle Eastern Michigan in a non-conference game at Old College Field on Sunday, Oct. 24 at noon.
