Women's Tennis Completes Second Day Of Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team finished the second day of competition Saturday at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan. Senior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) highlighted the day's events by reaching the finals of the "Blue" singles flight.
Thompson, who was seeded second in the field, opened the day with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory over Reedhina Parekh of Western Michigan in the quarterfinals. Thompson then defeated Western Michigan's Rattiya Hiranrat in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-4, to reach Sunday's final. She will play Allie Shafner of Michigan for the title.
Also in the "Blue" singles flight, freshman Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) both fell twice. Bader lost in the quarterfinals to Michigan's Debra Streifler, 6-3, 7-6(4), before losing in the consolation bracket to Lauren Clay of Xavier, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. Schnitzer dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision in the quarterfinals to Hiranrat, and lost to Parekh in the consolation bracket, 6-7(5), 6-2, 10-1.
In the "Maize" singles flight, sophomore Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) fell in the semifinals to Michigan's Nina Yaftali, 6-1, 6-2. In consolation matches, senior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lindsay Brown of Cincinnati, and junior Marta Walasek (Ann Arbor, Mich.) beat Dominika Dabrowski of Marquette, 2-6, 6-4, 10-3.
In the "Victors" singles round robin flight, senior Marissa Macholz (East Lansing, Mich.) dropped a 6-0, 6-0 verdict to Erica Wolfe of Bowling Green.
In doubles, Andrews and Thompson reached the semifinals with a 9-7 win over Calbeto and Bonnelly of Marquette, but the Spartan duo was then beaten by Jeanmaire and Parekh of Western Michigan, 8-2. Bader and Gustafson reached the consolation finals by winning twice on Saturday. The duo defeated Watkins and Donovan of Marquette, 8-1, and edged Dabrowski and Dokter of Marquette, 9-7. In a consolation bracket match, Schintzer and Walasek fell to Clary and Bauer of Xavier, 8-1.
Action at the Wolverine Invitational will conclude Sunday (Oct. 3).
