Women's Tennis Continues Play At Eck Classic

South Bend, Ind. - The Michigan State women's tennis team continued play Friday (Oct. 15) at the Eck Classic, hosted by Notre Dame. After a round of doubles competition yesterday, singles competition began earlier today. Other teams also in attendance include Kansas, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Virginia.
Friday's action opened with matches vs. Virginia. Virginia's team of Diana Srebovic and Douglas Wink defeated MSU's team of junior Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and sophomore Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia), 8-2. MSU senior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) and freshman Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) were defeated by Virgina's Lori Stern and Kristen James, 8-6. Sophomore Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) and senior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) were able to nab an 8-4 victory over Virginia's Lauren Bruch and Rachel Del Priore. There was also a singles matched played as Marta Bechlinwanis defeated freshman Jaylen Musselman (Muskegon, Mich.), 8-3.
MSU next tangled with Ohio State, and the Spartan doubles team of Thompson and Bader was the lone victor for MSU, defeating Ohio State's Emily DeCamilla and Emily Howard, 8-5. Brady and Andrews fell, 8-2, to Lindsey Adams and Caitlin O'Keefe, and Schnitzer and Gustafson dropped an 8-2 verdict to Kristin Messmer and Sonia Ruzimovsky. Also, Musselman fell in singles to OSU's Silvia Prajescu, 8-2.
In afternoon singles matches vs. Virginia, Dora Bechliwanis defeated MSU's Andrews, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8), and Virgina's Marta Bechliwanis beat MSU's Gustafson 6-2, 6-1.
In the final singles round vs. Kansas, MSU began to see a few more victories, taking three of four matches. Thompson battled her way to defeat Christine Skoda of Kansas, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-4). Bader also held up strong as she defeated Lauren Hommell, 6-1, 6-1. MSU's Schnitzer dropped Luiz Loureiro of Kansas, 6-2, 6-2. Brady was the lone casualty for MSU, falling 7-6, 6-4 to the Jayhawks' Stephanie Smith.
Play will continue tomorrow at 10 a.m. (EDT) when MSU takes on Virginia in singles play.
