Eck Classic Continues To Test Women's Tennis

South Bend, Ind. - The Michigan State women's tennis team continued play today, Saturday (Oct. 16) at the Eck Classic, hosted by Notre Dame. Today the Spartans faced Virginia, Kansas and Notre Dame.
The Spartans started their day against Virginia in singles, followed by competition in doubles against Kansas. It wouldn't be until the afternoon that MSU would face OSU for a complete round of singles.
In morning competition against Virginia, freshman Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) was the only Spartan to pick up a win as she defeated Kristen James, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6). Sophomore Pascale Schnitzer dropped her first set against Lori Stern,2-6, but came back to win the second set, 6-2, but fell in the tie breaker 1-0 (10-2). MSU freshman Jaylen Musselman (Muskegon, Mich.) was faced with Rachel Del Priore and was defeated 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles competition against Kansas, Bader also proved to be a tough competitor as she teamed up with senior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) to defeat Brittany Brown and Ashley Filberth, 8-3. Also emerging with a victory was the Spartan duo of senior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) and sophomore Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile), as they clinched an 8-5 victory over Anna Jackson and Stephanie Smith of Kansas.
Ohio State proved to be another tough competition for the Spartans as Thompson was the only Spartan to record a singles victory. Thompson stomped over the Buckeye's Caitlin O'Keefe 6-2, 6-1. MSU's Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) was faced with a rough match against Kristin Messmer and was defeated 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2).
Play will continue tomorrow at the Eck Tennis Pavilion at 2:30 p.m.(EDT) as MSU takes on Notre Dame in singles.
