Women's Tennis Completes Day One At Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team had a successful opening day Friday at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan. Four players are still alive in the main draws of their respective flights, while two doubles teams have moved into the quarterfinals.
In the "Blue" singles flight, all three Spartans that competed earned opening-round victories. Senior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.), seeded second, won her opening match over Xavier's Stephanie Bauer, 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Erin Watkins of Marquette, while freshman Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) escaped with a 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 win against Susie Schoenberger of Bowling Green.
There were two rounds of singles completed in the "Maize" singles flight, and sophomore Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) moved into the semifinals with a pair of victories. Andrews beat Marquette's Francina Bonnelly, 6-1, 6-2, before discarding Monica Sly of Michigan, 5-7, 7-5, 10-3. Senior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) won her opening match against Pryanka Parekh of Western Michigan, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, but then fell to Michigan's Lindsey Goldstein, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Marta Walasek (Ann Arbor, Mich.) dropped her opener to Cincinnati's Lindsay Brown, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8, then lost to Heidi Romer of Bowling Green, 6-2, 6-1.
In the "Wolverine" singles flight, freshman Eilene Cotter (Jackson, Mich.) lost her only match, falling to Jackie Vilines of Xavier, 6-0, 6-2. In the "Victor" singles round robin flight, senior Marissa Macholz (East Lansing, Mich.) fell in her only contest, dropping a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Xavier's Kate Lohner.
In doubles, Andrews and Thompson received a bye in the first round before thumping Papa and Potts of Xavier, 8-2. MSU's team of Schnitzer and Walasek also received a bye in the opening round before beating Vilines and Lohner of Xavier, 8-6. The other team to compete for MSU, Bader and Gustafson, lost their opener to Bemosky and Saruta of Western Michigan, 8-3, before rebounding to beat Klauck and Reasoner of Cincinnati, 8-5.
Michigan State will continue action at the Wolverine Invitational through Sunday.
