Spartan Gymnastics Finishes Third at Florida

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics finished third of four teams on Friday night at No. 3 Florida. State freshman Victoria Iakounina was the top scorer for the Spartans in two events for the second week in a row. The Spartans finished the competition in third place with a 194.474, while the Gators finished first (197.225), North Carolina State was second (194.875) and Illinois-Chicago took fourth (192.675).
The Spartans started the meet on floor with Sarah Alexander, Chayla HIll and Anna Hunsinger all posting 9.825s. State sophomore Leia Langhoff recorded a career-best 9.800. MSU finished the floor exercise with a score of 49.025 after the first rotation, and State's score was good for second place among all four teams in the event.
On vault, Iakounina's 9.800 was State's top score and gave her eighth place in the event. Hill finished second for the Spartans with a score of 9.750, while Anderson finished next among MSU competitors with a 9.675. State's team score of 48.475 placed them third in the event.
On bars, Iakounina was again State's top scorer with a score of 9.725, while Coleman and Alexander both posted 9.625s. MSU's team placed third with a score of 48.050.
In the final rotation, MSU posted a team score of 48.900 on balance beam, tying the Spartans for second with N.C. State in the event. Yarbrough, Miles and Alexander all posted 9.800s, while Iakounina and Simpson finished with 9.750s.
The Spartans next compete on Sunday, Jan. 25 in their first dual meet of the season at Illinois. Meet time is set for 2 p.m. EST.
