Women's Tennis Drops Season Opener At No. 12 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Michigan State women's tennis team opened the 2004 spring season with a tough match at Vanderbilt, and the Commodores emerged with a 7-0 victory. It was also the season opener for Vanderbilt, which enters the spring season ranked No. 12 nationally.
Vanderbilt swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. All three matches were decided by scores of 8-2.
In singles, sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) was the lone Spartan to win a set, taking the first set at No. 2 from No. 94 Kelly Schmandt, 6-4, before dropping the next two sets, 6-0, 6-0.
The remaining Spartans struggled to score points against the Vanderbilt squad which featured four nationally-ranked performers in its singles lineup. Junior Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) had the most success despite playing the highest-ranked of the Commodores, dropping a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles to No. 39 Audra Falk.
The rest of MSU's lineup, which included senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) at No. 3, freshman Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) at No. 4, junior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) at No. 5 and freshman Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) at No. 6, won a total of just five games.
MSU will return to action Saturday when the Spartans face No. 31 Virginia in Nashville at 1:30 p.m. CST.
