EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's men's golf team will head east Sept. 28-30 for the 10th annual Adams Cup of Newport at the Newport National Golf Club in Rhode Island. The Spartans will be defending their title this week; they won the 2002 event shooting a three-round score of 873.
The par-72 Orchard course should provide some home cooking for the Spartans; one of its designers was Michigan State alum, Arthur Hills. This year is the first year that the event will be held at only one course. The event is named in honor of Rhode Island alum and community leader, Bob Adams.
Joining Michigan State and host Rhode Island in this year's field at the Adams Cup will be Furman, Maryland, Marshall, Minnesota, Mississippi, Pepperdine, South Florida, Alabama-Birmingham, Xavier and Yale.
Michigan State finished seventh last week at the Inverness Intercollegiate shooting a three-round total of 907. Senior Ben Fox (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and freshman Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the way, finishing in a tie for 13th place. Their 225 total was nine shots off the pace of tournament winner John Merrick of UCLA.
Junior Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) finished tied for 32nd (78-77-74) and redshirt freshman Zac Zedrick (Danville, Ill.) was 38th (80-75-75). Rounding out Michigan State's starting five was freshman Craig Revell (Kingston, Ontario) whose three-round total of 237 put him in 60th place.
