Men's Soccer Stumbles Against UC Santa Barabara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Michigan State men's soccer team dropped the first game of its' California road trip on Friday night. The Spartans were topped by No. 14 UC Santa Barbara, 2-1, in Santa Barbara, Calif. The loss drops MSU to 2-2 on the season, and UC Santa Barbara improves to 3-0-1.
Both teams were scoreless in the first half. Just minutes into the second, however, UC Santa Barbara's Drew McAthy scored his fifth goal of the year off a header on a crossing pass to give the Gauchos a lead.
Michigan State knotted the game at 83:29, when Thomas Trivelloni (Sr., Mt. Clemens) capitalized on a pass from sophomore forward Ryan McMahen (Munster, Ind.). The goal was Trivelloni's team-leading third of the season.
At 86:35, McMahen took down a UC Santa Barbara player to prevent a score, however the play resulted in a penalty kick for the Gauchos. On the kick, McAthy scored his second goal of the game and sixth goal of the year, which proved to be the game winner.
The Spartans' Mike Robinson (Sr., Troy) recorded eight saves in the loss.
Michigan State will head to Irvine for a match on Sunday at 5 p.m. EDT against the UC Irvine Anteaters.
