EAST LANSING, Mich. - The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee has selected the teams and individuals that will participate in the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships. The Michigan State men's golf team was one of 27 teams selected to the NCAA Central Regional Championships, which will be held May 15-17 at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kansas.
"I believe that the Central Regional is a good fit for our team," said MSU head coach Mark Hankins. "It's a good, tough course. We believe the tougher the course is, the more it works to our advantage."
This will mark MSU's second-straight trip to regionals. The Spartans received a bid to play in the NCAA East Regional in Roswell, Ga., in 2002, which marked the team's first trip to the postseason since 1994.
The Spartans are coming off a seventh-place finish at the 2003 Big Ten Championships. Michigan State is led by senior Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.), who leads the team with a 73.21 stroke average and junior Casey Lubahn (Sand Lake, Mich.) with a 73.48 stroke average. Both players tied for 13th at the Big Ten Championships.
Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, will be conducted May 15-17. A total of 27 teams and six individuals have been selected for each regional competition with ten teams and two individuals advancing from each regional to the championships finals.
The championships will be conducted May 27-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State University is the host institution for this year's championships.
